Voices of Minnesota

Envision Minnesota has produced numerous projects that lift up the voices of Minnesotans and share their stories. In some cases we are recognizing outstanding deeds accomplished by individuals, such as the Lake-Friendly Awards and the Water Warriors; others are original writing submitted by essayists across the state. Our most current Voices project is Legacy Letters. Follow the links below to learn more about each project.

  • Legacy Letters

Legacy Letters are one-minute videos in which winning essayists talk about what they treasure about Minnesota or its history. A co-production with Twin Cities Public Television.

  • Voices for the Land

Envision Minnesota sponsored an essay contest called Voices for the Land. The winning essays were collected in a beautiful coffee-table book with gorgeous black and white photographs by Brian Peterson, as well as in paperback chapbook editions.

  • Voices for the Lakes

The Voices for the Lakes project was started as a companion to Voices for the Land. In 2010 we honored 47 odes to Minnesota's lakes from various essayists' perspectives. All of the essays are collected on our website.

  • Voices for the City

People interested in life in MInnesota's urban areas submitted their essays to the Voices for the City, a companion to the Voices for the Land project. We presented a chapbook of the winning essays.

  • Lake Friendly Awards

Every fall, we present awards to individuals and organizations that amaze us with their efforts to protect shorelands and water quality through restorative mitigation efforts.

  • Water Warriors

Our annually recognized Water Warriors are individuals who do outstanding things in the name of water quality protection.

  • Smart Growth Design Awards

For several years, we awarded development projects that demonstrated the principles of smart growth.
