"The Fawn and the Lake" by Jennifer Hendrickson

As the beautiful lake glimmers in the morning sun, my dad drives the boat as we head out to go fishing. As we were driving out on the lake, something in the water caught my eye. I showed my dad and he directed the boat to its direction. Pulling up next to the mysterious creature, my dad and I both gasped in shock as we realized what it was.

It was a white-tailed, baby fawn with little white spots. It looked so delicate right there in the water. We heaved the little fawn up into the boat. It sat clumsily, drenched with water. My dad and I decided that we best bring him to the shore where it had come from. We set off for the shore with the baby fawn.

Nearing the shore, there were colorful rocks. The woods had oak trees and brush that were surrounding the shore. I was thinking maybe the fawn’s mother was nearby. When we reached the shore, my dad and I lifted the fawn out of the boat and onto the ground. It stumbled on the rocks and called out for its mother. Sure enough its mother came and stood at the edge of the woods. Jumping back in the boat, we started out to the lake. Looking back, we saw the most bizarre thing! The little baby fawn was following us back out to the lake. We couldn’t just leave it, so we stopped and waited for it to catch up. We lifted it back into the boat (by now our arms were getting sore!) Wondering what to do with the fawn, we decided to head back to the shore. When we got there, the mother was still there. As we put the fawn back on the rocks, it saw its mother. The fawn ran to her. My dad and I were happy for them. We set out on the lake and looked back just in case, but no baby fawn was following. The mom and fawn jumped back into the woods.

I want to see those beautiful wonders more often on the lake. They are worth seeing. My family is thinking about moving to live on a lake, so we can see nature every day.
